MPs Expenses: Mel Stride under Fire

Conservative MP Faces Scrutiny Over £17,000 Food and Drink Claims

Leaked documents reveal lavish spending by Central Devon representative

Mel Stride, the Conservative MP for Central Devon, has come under fire after it was revealed that he claimed over £17,000 in food and drink expenses in the past two years. The leaked documents, obtained by the Sunday Times, show that Mr. Stride, who is also the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, spent £5,828 on dinners at a single London restaurant in 2021. He also claimed £3,412 for alcohol and £1,549 for room service during the same period.

The revelations have prompted calls for Mr. Stride to resign, with some MPs accusing him of abusing his position. The Labour Party has said that the expenses claims show a "complete lack of judgment" and have called for an investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.

Mr. Stride has defended his expenses, saying that they were "within the rules" and that he has a "duty to represent my constituents in London." However, the leaked documents have raised questions about his spending habits and sparked concerns that he may have been misusing public funds.
