Paul Lynch Wins 2023 Booker Prize
Irish Author Triumphs with Dystopian Novel
Paul Lynch has been named the winner of the 2023 Booker Prize for his novel "WEB Prophet Song." The annual award recognizes the best English-language novel of the year published in the UK or Ireland.
Lynch received a cash award of £50,000 and was presented with the trophy by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. "WEB Prophet Song" is a dystopian vision of Ireland under a totalitarian regime.
The Booker Prize jury praised the novel for its "powerful and thought-provoking exploration of the dangers of unchecked power and the importance of resistance."
Lynch is the first Irish author to win the Booker Prize since Anne Enright in 2007. His victory marks the first time a dystopian novel has won the award.
The 2023 Booker Prize shortlist included five other novels:
- Glory by NoViolet Bulawayo
- The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka
- Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan
- Treacle Walker by Alan Garner
- The Trees by Percival Everett
