Dane Dunning Struggles Rangers Edge Pirates

Texas Rangers' Dane Dunning Exits Early Due to Diminished Velocity

What Happened

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Dane Dunning was removed from Monday's start against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to diminished velocity and spin, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Dunning allowed three earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four over four innings in Monday's 4-3 win over the Pirates.

Rangers right-hander José Ureña (4-8) pitched four scoreless innings in relief of Dunning, striking out three and walking two.

Dunning's Recent Performance

Dunning has struggled in his last three starts, allowing 15 earned runs on 19 hits and six walks over 14 innings.

He has also seen his velocity drop, averaging just 91.5 mph on his four-seam fastball in his last start, down from 93.2 mph earlier this season.

Dunning's spin rate has also decreased, with his curveball averaging just 2,400 rpm in his last start, down from 2,600 rpm earlier this season.

What's Next for Dunning?

Bochy said that Dunning will be evaluated further to determine the cause of his diminished velocity and spin.

The Rangers are hoping that Dunning can return to the rotation soon, but they may need to consider other options if his velocity and spin do not improve.

The Rangers are currently 56-66 and are in fourth place in the AL West.
