FBI Warns of Cryptocurrency Scams
Scammer Tactics
Scammers are using sophisticated techniques to impersonate cryptocurrency exchange employees and steal funds from unsuspecting victims. They typically reach out through unsolicited calls or messages, pretending to be representatives of a legitimate exchange.
Impersonation and Urgency
Scammers create a sense of urgency by informing victims of a supposed issue with their account. They may claim that their account has been compromised or that there is a problem with a recent transaction.
FBI Recommendations
The FBI advises cryptocurrency holders to take the following steps to protect themselves from scams:
- Never share personal or financial information with unsolicited callers or message senders.
- Be wary of any unsolicited offers of investment or account assistance.
- If you receive a suspicious call or message, contact the legitimate cryptocurrency exchange directly.
Reporting Scams
If you believe you or someone you know may have been a victim of a cryptocurrency scam, immediately report it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) through its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) website.
